چکیده

This paper examines the potential of ASTER data in mapping the geology of an arid area in Africa using spectral analysis techniques. Equipped with a relatively broad spectral range, fine spatial resolution, and a large number of bands, ASTER data are especially attractive to many geological researchers in Africa, due to their open availability and associated minimal costs for academic use. The spectral analysis of an ASTER dataset covering part of the Neoproterozoic Allaqi-Heiani suture, Southern Egypt has demonstrated it to be more effective in detecting lithological units than traditional multispectral analysis procedures, such as the maximum likelihood classifier. The effectiveness of these spectral analysis techniques used in this study lies in their ability to compare a pixel spectrum with the spectra of known pure materials, extracted from the spectral endmember selection procedures, including minimum noise factor (MNF), pixel purity index (PPI) and n-dimensional visualization. Among the three spectral analysis algorithms employed, spectral angle mapping (SAM) and spectral feature fitting (SFF), produced accurate classifications that were close to the ground reference data. Linear spectral unmixing (LSU), although failing to achieve a satisfactory overall classification accuracy, demonstrated potential in depicting intercalation of layered rocks. It is concluded that these spectral analysis techniques have proven to be useful tools in geological mapping of the arid regions in Africa, with their abilities to capitalize on the enhanced spectral information of ASTER data. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Application of Spectral Analysis in Mapping Hydrothermal Alteration of the Northwestern Part of the Kerman Cenozoic Magmatic Arc, Iran

The northwestern part of the Kerman Cenozoic magmatic arc (KCMA) contains many areas with porphyry copper mineralization. In this research, we used the advanced space-borne thermal emission and reflection radiometer (ASTER) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper plus (ETM+) images of this region to map the distribution of hydrothermally altered rocks, based on their mineral assemblages. The spectral meas...

Delineation of hydrothermal alteration Zones for porphyry systems utilizing ASTER data in Jebal barez area, SE Iran

Abstract: The Urumieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Belt (UDMB) is the host of many Iranian Cu porphyry deposits. Southern part of this belt, in the range of geological Jebal barez, has been less investigated because of the mountainous and rough topography and also some security confrontation. Porphyry deposits are associated with hydrothermal alteration zones can be mapped using remote sensing data such as...

Crustal evolution in the East African Orogen: a neodymium isotopic perspective

The East African Orogen (EAO) is one of Earth’s great collision zones, where East and West Gondwana collided to form the supercontinent ‘Greater Gondwana’ or ‘Pannotia’ at the end of Neoproterozoic time. There is now sufficient Nd isotopic data for basement rocks of the EAO to yield a useful summary. A total of 449 samples were gleaned from the literature, recalculated to a common value for the...

Spectral Analysis of Aster, Hyperion, and Quickbird Data for Geomorphological and Geological Research in Egypt (dakhla Oasis, Western Desert)

This paper presents an evaluation, to which degree geological and geomorphological information can be obtained from modern remote sensing systems like the multispectral ASTER or the hyperspectral Hyperion sensor for a hyperarid desert region like the Dakhla Oasis (Western Desert, Egypt). To account for the enhanced information content these sensors provide, hyperspectral analysis methods, incor...
